Trailer Wheel Lug Nut Re-Torque Guidelines and Star Patterns

If you’re looking for information about when to tighten your trailer’s lug nuts or how much torque to use, this quick guide will tell you what you need to know.

When to Tighten Your Trailer’s Lug Nuts:

For New Trailers:

Tighten your new trailer’s lug nuts again after each of these intervals.

  • 25-50 miles
  • 100 miles
  • 200-300 miles

After That Initial Period:

  • tighten again every 3000-5000 miles,
  • after tire rotations
  • and seasonally (after winter storage)

Remember to tighten your lugs in a star pattern (see below for diagrams.)

Failure to follow these steps can result in wheel damage, stud failure, or wheel separation.

For your trailer’s torque specifications it’s best to check your trailer’s documentation. But if that’s not available or for general information purposes you can see our table below.

Lug Tightening Patterns – Star Tightening Pattern Diagrams

To most safely tighten the lug nuts on your trailer’s tires (or any vehicle) you should move from one lug to another in the patterns shown below for four-lug wheels, five-lug wheels, six-lug and eight-lug.

For trailer users new to tightening lug nuts: Remember! Don’t tighten them down all the way on the first pass. Doing the first pass in the star pattern, tighten them to about 50% to 70% of final torque to ensure the wheel seats evenly. Then do another pass in the star pattern and tighten them the rest of the way to torque spec.

Lug Nut Torque Table for Trailers

Here is the table of torque specifications by stud size, wheel size and type, and lug nut type. Please note that it is best to check your trailer’s documentation to be sure. For a printer-friendly version click here.
